I think there was a vocaloid thing at one point… either that, or it was fanfiction a friend of mine was working on ^_^;

Think the closest thing we’ve got are Battle Fever (dancing), Goggle V (rhythmic gymnastics), and Kamen Rider Hibiki.  Kohkyo Sentai Kanadenger is a Vocaloid thing done for animation competitions but it should totally be canon. >_>

In which I likely miss another point about tokusatsu

So I noticed a lot of bellyaching about Megaforce.  Granted I’ve only seen a few of the early episodes, but some of it is justified (I’m still wondering if the pink ranger can be anyone other than a person who grows up to be a self-righteous hipster vegan in college). There’s also probably a lot of “Worst. Season. Evar” hyperbole going on, which I dismiss for various reasons.

Here’s the kicker, though: I’m almost sympathetic to the plight of Megaforce.  This season is a bit of a watershed moment for the series in that it will be the first to truly showcase how American television has changed.  The 40-50 episode season just isn’t feasible anymore, now that everything is once a week with A-seasons and B-seasons.  A full 50-episode-plus-movies sentai will have to be condensed into 22 half-hours or else Saban will fall off the pace.  When you’re under the gun like that, you’re going to look for shortcuts eventually, and pulling plots from the sentai without much QA is one way to preserve time, money, and relative sanity.

Another thing worth noting is something very simple: Not all children’s shows can be Avatar or Gravity Falls or Your Favorite Title Here.  Granted, it’s never good when a show ends up being pablum, but that tends to be the norm. Good writing is hard; not everyone can do it.  Plus, if what I heard about Goseiger is accurate, this could’ve been a “Blood From A Stone” situation to begin with.

This is not to justify what Megaforce is doing, it is merely an explation as to why I think it is what it is and why it’s not the end of the world.  I personally have not much more of an interest in this season or the next. (Honestly, I feel Gokaiger’s success was due in part to luck, something that won’t carry overseas.)  I’ll be interested to see how Saban adapts Gobusters because I don’t think it would take a lot of finesse to adapt the source material to the US.  I also thought GB was a good example of how to tell a story.
